In Wicca, there are five elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Spirit. Each element is associated with different zodiac signs, Sabbats, flora, fauna and many other subjects. At the start of a ritual, the Wiccan conducting the ceremony calls each element to each respective corner (north, east, south and west) clockwise, and relieves them at the end of the ritual, counter clockwise.
Earth is represented physically in the environment by our bodies, rocks, soil, cave systems, forests, fields and so on. As an element, Earth is associated with the direction north and most commonly the colours green and brown (sometimes also yellow and black). Earth is characterised with patience, stability, respect and endurance. It’s season is Winter and zodiac signs include Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
Air is represented by our breath, the sky, birds (and feathers), incense smoke, mountain tops, wind and more. Air is associated with the direction east and the colours white, yellow and silver. This element is characterised with intelligence, objectivity and inspiration. It’s season is Spring and zodiac signs include Aquarius, Libra and Gemini.
Fire is represented by our souls, stars, volcanoes, deserts, candles and many others. Fire is associated with the direction south and most commonly the colours red and orange (sometimes also gold and white). This element is characterised with health, strength, sexuality, courage and passion. It’s season is Summer and zodiac signs include Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
Water is represented by our blood, cups, the Moon, rain and just about any source of water such as lakes, rivers, oceans, streams etc. Water is associated with the direction west and most commonly the colour blue (sometimes also indigo, green and black). This element is characterised by healing, compassion and forgiveness. It’s season is Autumn and zodiac signs include Scorpio, Cancer and Pisces.
Spirit is different to other elements as it has no true form or real representations apart from colour. Spirit is an important part in Wicca as it is said to be present in all things, binding everyone and everything together. Spirit is associated with the colours purple and white it has no direction or characteristics or season but at the same time is all of them.
As always, I will add to this guide as and when I learn more about and around the subject.
